Smart vaporizer choices optimize energy efficiency in LNG regasification

Chart Industries | March 23, 2026

Key considerations:

  • Choice of heat source: Systems based on ambient air, water, or submerged combustion vaporizers (SCV) each have a different impact on operating costs, efficiency, and emissions. The optimal solution depends on location and operating profile.
  • Energy losses in vaporizers: Large temperature differences between LNG and the heat source cause unavoidable thermodynamic losses. Smart phasing and configuration can significantly improve performance.
  • Pumping strategies versus pressure-build solutions:  Pumps offer flexibility and precise control but increase energy consumption. Pressure-build solutions reduce power consumption but sometimes limit operational flexibility.
  • Hybrid configurations: By combining multiple vaporization techniques, operators can better align efficiency, reliability, and flexibility with seasonal demand variations.

Ambient-Air Vaporizers (AAVs)

  • Large-surface finned-tube bundles engineered for high thermal efficiency
  • Integrated HVAC options for air pre-heating in sub-zero climates, reducing frost formation to ≤ 1%
  • Broad turndown ratio (30–100%) enables flexible operation for batch or continuous unloading

Steam-Heated Vaporizers (SHVs)

  • Multi-pass coil design ensures uniform steam distribution and low pressure drop
  • Closed-loop flash steam recovery system pre-heats condensate, reducing boiler fuel consumption by up to 15%
  • Modular skid-mounted systems simplify installation, integration, and maintenance

Water-Heated Vaporizers (WHVs)

  • Optimized for seawater or waste-heat loop supply
  • Fabricated from corrosion-resistant stainless steel (316L) for marine durability
  • In-line automatic back-flush system prevents fouling and maintains consistent performance

Advanced Heat Integration

  • Cascade-loop design reuses cold LNG vapor for pre-cooling feed streams
  • Multi-effect vaporization utilizes low-grade waste heat to reduce external utility demand
  • Smart control logic automatically switches between AAV, SHV, and WHV based on ambient and fuel gas conditions

Optimized vaporizer selection and sizing enables LNG terminal operators to increase capacity, reduce OPEX, and enhance system reliability, regardless of environmental conditions.
